an industry insider and mobile phone chip expert revealed that TSMC’s 2nm production will not be in production until the end of 2025, and the iPhone 17 will not be able to catch up at all. The iPhone 17’s processor will still use 3nm, and the iPhone 18 will have 2nm.
According to previously disclosed information, TSMC will start mass production of 2nm next year. Since Apple is TSMC’s main customer, it is usually the first company to obtain TSMC’s new process. For example, in 2023, Apple obtained all of TSMC’s 3nm chip orders. The iPhone 15 Pro series is the industry’s first smartphone equipped with a 3nm chip.
It is reported that compared with the 3nm process, TSMC’s 2nm chip speed can increase by 10%-15% at the same power consumption, and power consumption can be reduced by 25%-30% at the same speed.
According to the revelations of mobile phone chip experts, in the next two years, 3nm will be the standard process technology for high-end flagship chips, and both the iPhone 16 series and iPhone 17 series will use 3nm chips.
It is worth noting that the four major manufacturers including Apple, Qualcomm, Nvidia and AMD have already booked TSMC’s 3nm process production capacity on a large scale, and a wave of customers have emerged, which will continue until 2026.
