Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Expected To Hit 4.3GHz In Speed

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip has been on the market for nearly half a year, and rumors about its successor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, are already swirling. The latest buzz suggests significant advancements in terms of design completion, testing timelines, and production scales, with an eye-catching potential frequency speed that could set new benchmarks for mobile processing power.

According to recent leaks, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to wrap up its design phase by April, with shipments to OEM manufacturers for testing slated for June. Mass production is anticipated to kick off in September, leading up to its official launch. This chip is set to be Qualcomm’s first venture into the 3nm process technology, with TSMC handling the manufacturing.

Previously, there were speculations about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 reaching a 4.0GHz frequency. However, the latest updates hint at an even more impressive peak frequency of up to 4.3GHz, rivaling the Snapdragon X Elite designed for PC laptops. The X Elite operates at a standard frequency of 3.8GHz, with the capability to boost single and dual cores up to 4.3GHz. This represents a significant leap from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s top frequency of 3.3GHz, marking an incredible 1GHz increase between generations, especially considering the modest jump from a 4nm to a 3nm process.

Critics argue that even if such speeds were attainable, they could only be maintained briefly due to the immense power consumption, potentially reaching up to 10W per core—far beyond what any smartphone could handle. A more realistic acceleration frequency might be 3.8GHz, aligning with the peak performance of Apple’s A17 Pro and equivalent to the Snapdragon X Elite’s standard frequency, yet still 500MHz higher than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

As the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is still in the design phase, Qualcomm is likely exploring various specifications to maximize its potential before settling on the most suitable configuration. Additionally, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 faces cost considerations, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 already estimated at around $200.
