Apple’s iPhone Fold uses top-tier thin-film materials: its durability is off the charts.

According to Fast Technology on February 6th, in order to differentiate itself in the foldable screen market, Apple is evaluating a more durable film technology for its first foldable phone, the iPhone Fold. The company is currently in the materials testing phase, striving to surpass existing competitors in screen durability and touch feel.

According to the latest supply chain news, Apple is considering using a transparent polyimide film as a protective layer over the ultra-thin glass of its foldable screen. Reports indicate that Apple engineers are conducting comparative tests on two options: polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and transparent polyimide (CPI).

Although most foldable screens on the market use ultra-thin glass to improve display clarity, a flexible polymer film still needs to be adhered to the glass surface to resist scratches. Since this film comes into direct contact with the user’s fingertips, it not only determines the screen’s resistance to damage but also directly affects the smoothness of daily operation.

The current industry benchmark , Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series, typically use a PET film over the glass. In contrast, Apple seems to prefer transparent polyimide, a material that is more expensive and has better surface hardness and abrasion resistance.

Regarding potential suppliers, Kolon Industries has already come to Apple’s attention with its mature CPI film production line. In addition, Lens Technology is expected to be responsible for supplying ultra-thin glass and precisely applying selected protective films to the glass surface.

Based on current leaks, this iPhone Fold will feature a 7.8-inch internal screen and a 5.5-inch external screen. To maintain a clean design, it may forgo Face ID and switch to Touch ID.

In terms of performance, the device is expected to be equipped with the A20 Pro chip and will debut Apple’s self-developed C2 modem. It is expected to be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series later this year.
