First Impressions of the STEPX Neo Smart Phone: AI Capable of Autonomous Command Execution

Fast Technology reported that StepX launched its first large-model native smart phone, the STEPX Neo Preview Edition, this evening, priced at 3999 yuan (16GB+256GB).

In terms of hardware configuration, the phone features a small 6.36-inch 1.5K screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 mobile platform, a 32-megapixel front camera, 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and comes pre-installed with the new StepAOS operating system.

Most smartphones now have built-in AI functions and voice assistants, but these primarily handle tasks such as information retrieval and content generation. Users who want to use features like photo editing, summarizing, or translation often need to first find the function entry point and then tell it how to do it.

In contrast, the STEPX Neo early access version allows AI to further participate in task planning and execution, exploring how intelligent agents can be applied in daily life. For example, if a user says, “I’m going to Beijing tomorrow, I have a meeting at 12 o’clock, please book my flight,” the StepX Amoo can understand the intent by combining context and memory, automatically call services such as Ctrip and calendar, and finally present the results to you.

It doesn’t simply identify keywords and lead you to an app; instead, it tries to close the loop within the conversation, then delegates complex tasks to multiple intelligent agents. In short, it’s task-centric, shifting from process-based interaction to result-based interaction, ensuring that intent directly leads to the outcome.

More importantly, with user authorization, global memory can remember your basic information, behavioral scenarios, and even deep preferences such as “not eating spicy food,” and apply them to subsequent interactions.

To ensure Amoo can hear clearly and provide feedback, the STEPX Neo early access version is also equipped with a six-microphone array, a low-power audio sensing chip, and the Whisper 1.0 sound pickup algorithm, enabling the Step Amoo to accurately recognize the user’s voice even in complex sound environments.

These scenarios suggest that the evolution of smartphones may not simply be about tapping the screen a few more times for the user, but rather about attempting to understand unspoken needs. Smartphones are transforming from tools that wait for instructions into intelligent partners capable of assisting with daily life.

In terms of design, the STEPX Neo Pre-Plan Edition adopts a retro-futuristic aesthetic design. Its back panel combines a transparent mechanical feel with the visual quality of an intelligent life form, and is available in two colors: carbon black and silicon silver. Paired with a metal frame, it combines flagship quality with a comfortable grip.
