Google’s first 3nm self-developed chip! Tensor G5 exposed

a mysterious device code-named Google Frankel appeared on the Geekbench benchmark website. This device is equipped with Google’s self-developed chip Tensor G5, with a single-core score of 1323 and a multi-core score of 4004.

Because the chip involved in the benchmark test is an early version, the overall performance of Tensor G5 is not very outstanding. It will be applied to the Google Pixel 10 series to be released next year.

It is reported that Google Tensor G5 is codenamed laguna and is built based on TSMC’s N3E process technology. This is Google’s first self-developed 3nm mobile phone chip. The Snapdragon 8 Extreme Edition and Dimensity 9400 chips also use TSMC’s N3E process.

This chip consists of 1 Arm Cortex-X4 super core, 5 Cortex-A725 large cores and 2 Arm Cortex-A520 small cores, and the CPU main frequencies are 3.40GHz, 2.66GHz and 2.44GHz respectively.

Earlier in June this year, supply chain news said that Google and TSMC had reached a strategic cooperation and successfully advanced the Tensor G5 chip samples to the design verification stage and entered the tape-out stage, which was another step closer to large-scale mass production.

Looking back over the past few years, many mobile phone brands have been trying to learn Apple’s vertical integration, but Apple’s model is easier said than done, and in reality only Huawei has done it.

Unlike other brands in the Android camp, Google, like Apple, controls the core operating system ecosystem and application distribution of smartphones. Its biggest weakness is the chip. Tensor G5 will be the core for Google to make up for its shortcomings.

If Tensor G5 is successfully launched, it means that Google will achieve comprehensive control from chips to operating systems, from application distribution to devices, and will be more capable of achieving a high degree of vertical integration and possess the core capabilities to directly challenge the iPhone.
