Apple has officially announced that with the release of iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4, developers of video calling applications now have the option to disable the Reactions feature by default within their apps. This update, which is part of Apple’s continuous effort to refine the user experience, allows for greater customization by app developers, addressing feedback from both developers and users seeking more control over app functionalities.
Introduced in iOS 17, the Reactions feature enables users to express themselves during video calls with 3D effects triggered by specific hand gestures, such as showing fireworks with a thumbs-up gesture. While innovative, this feature has been turned on by default, leading to some unintended interruptions during video calls.
The new API introduced in iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4, and likely macOS 14.4, which are expected to be publicly released in March, grants developers the ability to set the default behavior of Reactions within their applications. This means that apps like Zoom could opt to have Reactions turned off by default, though users can still manually activate the feature via the Control Center if they choose to.
Despite these changes, Reactions will remain enabled by default on iOS 17.4, ensuring that the feature is still readily available in FaceTime and other apps that do not utilize the new API.
This update comes as part of Apple’s broader strategy to enhance user experience and offer developers more flexibility in how they integrate iOS features into their apps. The decision not to disable Reactions by default across the board, but rather to allow app-specific settings, reflects Apple’s nuanced approach to software updates and feature management.
