Samsung Galaxy S25 series chooses Micron memory: its own products take a back seat

Samsung Galaxy S25 series may mainly use Micron’s memory rather than Samsung’s own products. This is the first time in Samsung’s flagship smartphones.

Samsung Electronics’ MX division has reportedly chosen Micron rather than the memory business unit of its sister unit DS division as the first supplier of LPDDR5x memory for its upcoming Galaxy S25 series of mobile phones.

Micron has been the second memory supplier for Samsung Electronics’ flagship Galaxy smartphones for many years, and this is the first time Micron has become the number one supplier in this field.

South Korean media believe that the MX department’s choice of external suppliers shows that the DS department’s memory business unit not only lost to SK Hynix in the HBM memory competition, but also performed worse than external competitors in the LPDDR field.

Sources said that Samsung’s DS department’s 1b nm LPDDR5x DRAM performed poorly in two key parameters: heat and yield. The MX department ultimately chose Micron as the primary supplier after comprehensive consideration of performance and price.

However, the industry generally believes that although Micron has temporarily become the number one supplier, as Samsung’s LPDDR5x process improves, the MX department will gradually increase its orders to the DS department during the life cycle of the Galaxy S25 series, and ultimately the DS department will still provide a larger proportion of memory. However, the order share obtained by the DS department will still be significantly encroached by Micron.
