Samsung Unveils Exynos 2600 With Its First Homegrown GPU

Samsung has recently announced a major breakthrough in smartphone technology by unveiling the world’s first 2nm mobile processor known as the Exynos 2600. This new chip is expected to power the Galaxy S26 lineup which is likely to launch early next year. One of the most significant aspects of the Exynos 2600 is that it features a GPU developed internally by Samsung something the company has not done before in its smartphone chips. This makes the Exynos 2600 a major technological achievement for Samsung.

According to a report from Yonhap News Agency, the Xclipse 960 GPU found inside the Exynos 2600 was developed internally by Samsung although it is still based on AMD’s graphics architecture. Since the release of the Exynos 2200, Samsung has been using graphics processors that were co-developed with AMD and built on AMD technology. The Exynos 2600 marks a change in approach as Samsung has now designed the GPU on its own even though it still relies on AMD’s architecture.

A graphics processing unit is a key part of a system-on-chip, as it manages all graphics related tasks on a device. It is responsible for handling and processing graphics that appears in games, apps and the overall user interface. As modern devices like phones, tablets and laptops become more powerful the need for a GPU that delivers strong performance while consuming less power has become a basic requirement.

Samsung reportedly began its journey into GPU development by first creating graphics processors for devices running the Windows operating system. Once this was achieved the company worked on improving power efficiency, performance and made further changes to ensure compatibility with the Android platform. Through these efforts, Samsung was able to create a mobile GPU. This is a major milestone, as very few companies including AMD, Intel, Nvidia and Qualcomm have been able to design GPUs entirely in house.

Reports suggest that beginning with the Exynos 2800 chipset, Samsung plans to completely stop using AMD’s GPU architecture. As a result, the company would develop GPUs for upcoming Exynos processors without any assistance from AMD. Such a move could help the company to reduce expenses and rely less on other firms for critical technology.
