Samsung Unveils Timeline For 2nm Process

Samsung has announced its ambitious timeline for the production of 2nm semiconductor technology, marking a significant milestone in the semiconductor industry battle. The company plans to commence manufacturing the 2nm process in South Korea next year, with a staggering investment of 500 trillion Korean won earmarked for the construction of a massive semiconductor factory in the country by 2047, dedicated to 2nm manufacturing.

The 2nm process is considered a critical breakthrough for the next generation of semiconductor technology, offering chips higher performance and lower power consumption. Samsung’s main competitor, TSMC, revealed early details of its 2nm chips at last year’s conference, introducing the N2 platform with GAAFET (gate-all-around field-effect transistor) architecture and backside power delivery technology. TSMC’s 2nm process, featuring nanosheet transistor architecture, promises a 10% to 15% speed increase over the 3nm process at the same power level, or a 25% to 30% reduction in power consumption at the same speed.

Industry insiders note that both Samsung and TSMC can mass-produce 2nm processes by 2025, though there may be differences in yield rates and customer acceptance. For instance, Qualcomm initially used Samsung’s 4nm process for the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 but switched to TSMC’s 4nm process due to power consumption issues, fully embracing TSMC for the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 series onwards.

Should Samsung improve its chip yield rates and manage power consumption effectively, it’s possible that Qualcomm’s future Snapdragon 8 series processors could once again be manufactured by Samsung.

In the 2nm technology race, neither Samsung nor TSMC can be declared the absolute winner, as the industry thrives on competition and innovation, much like a garden where a variety of flowers bloom together.
