Last fall, Apple introduced its FineWoven leather replacement, which was intended to be an environmentally and animal-friendly alternative. But customers hated this material and complaints flooded in. Now Apple is reacting and apparently giving up on FineWoven completely.
Apple’s premium cases used to be made of classic leather, but the Cupertino, California-based company wanted to do without this material in the future. In itself, this was a laudable idea, because after all, real leather is nothing more than animal skin. With great fanfare, FineWoven was introduced as a replacement; from now on, this fine fabric was to be used in iPhone cases
as well as watch straps. However, customers were dissatisfied from the start, with complaints that the material, which Apple said was reminiscent of suede, quickly showed visible traces. In addition, there is lint that quickly attaches itself to it, and the fine fabric attracts dirt. Now that would have been an alternative to other cases and bracelets, or customers could have decided for themselves whether they could live with it. However, Apple has positioned FineWoven as a direct premium replacement – and that also means the price hasn’t been revised downwards.
But now it’s over because as Twitter leaker Kosutami reports (via 9to5Mac ), Apple is giving up FineWoven again: “FineWoven is gone. Because its durability was poor. The entire production line was stopped and removed,” writes Kosutami.
However, there will be no return to leather, it is said, and Apple apparently wants to look for another alternative. A decision on this has not yet been made, but one candidate is certainly the widely used and proven Alcantara.
