Apple’s first foldable screen phone is internally referred to as iPhone Ultra.

Apple’s first foldable screen phone will be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series this September, and the specific name of this new product has attracted widespread attention.

Since the foldable iPhone was first revealed, it has been widely referred to in the industry as the iPhone Fold. However, earlier this year, leakers began to claim that the product would be named the iPhone Ultra.

Tech blogger Mark Gurman claims that Apple employees are also referring to this foldable screen as the iPhone Ultra. Whether the final name will be “Ultra” will be confirmed at the September product launch event.

As Apple’s first foldable screen product, this device features a 5.5-inch external screen and a 7.8-inch internal screen, with the internal screen having a 4:3 aspect ratio. When unfolded, it can provide a visual experience close to that of the iPad mini.

In terms of core specifications, the phone is equipped with a TSMC 2nm A20 Pro chip, comes standard with 12GB of RAM, and features Apple’s self-developed C2 5G modem. The battery capacity is approximately 5500mAh. The imaging system uses a dual 48MP rear camera setup, but omits a telephoto lens. The unfolded body is approximately 4.5mm thick, and the folded body is approximately 9.2mm thick.

In terms of design, the iPhone Ultra eliminates Face ID, opting instead for a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. It also removes the physical SIM card slot, fully supporting eSIM. On the system level, it will run iOS 27, optimized specifically for foldable screens, supporting split-screen, drag-and-drop functionality, and other interactive features, further expanding productivity scenarios.

Despite this being Apple’s first foldable screen product, the industry is generally optimistic about its prospects. Counterpoint Research predicts that global foldable phone shipments will grow by 21% year-on-year in 2026, with Apple expected to capture 25% market share in its first year. The brand landscape will also gradually shift from Samsung dominating the international market and Huawei leading the domestic market to a three-way competition between Apple, Samsung, and Huawei.

With Apple’s official entry into the market, the foldable screen industry is poised for explosive growth, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape.
