Big disappointment! iPhone 16 Pro Max 87 chargers tested: far less than 45W

since the release of the iPhone 16 series, there has been constant controversy surrounding its charging power, especially the 45W marked when the domestic bank entered the network, which made many people excited, but various signs indicated that it was not that high. For example, Li Nan claimed that the peak value did not exceed 39W.

In this regard, ChargerLab used a series of Apple and third-party chargers to test the charging power of the iPhone 16 Pro Max in detail.

1. Apple official charger

There are 15 models in total , ranging from the basic 5W to the 140W for laptops.

These chargers are all compatible with the iPhone 16 Pro Max, but the maximum power is only over 30W, which is enough to prove that this is the limit.

Among them, the 30W charger has a maximum power of 28.4W, and the 87W charger has a maximum power of 25.2W. It is recommended not to use them together.

2. Third-party charger

There are 72 models in total , from various brands, with power ranging from 20W to 200W.

There are no compatibility issues either, but the maximum power is also around 30W, among which the Patriot GaN 65W can reach 31.86W.

Powers over 30W can basically be achieved, and those around 30W are generally slightly lower than 29W. Strangely, the Xiaomi patch 45W can only achieve 25.5W.

3. Charging power/voltage

When using Apple’s 70W charger, the initial voltage is 15V and the peak power is 28W, which can be maintained for about 13 minutes.

After that, it dropped to 22W and 15W , and only 8W after 1 hour and 9 minutes , while the voltage dropped to 5V after 55 minutes.

After 2 hours and 7 minutes, the battery showed that it was fully charged, but charging was actually still continuing and it eventually took 2 hours and 20 minutes.

To put it in perspective,
it took 26 minutes to charge 50 percent, but it slowed down significantly after that, with 80 percent taking 57 minutes and the final 20 percent taking a whopping 1 hour and 23 minutes.

4. Charging temperature

After 15 minutes, the power was 26W, the maximum temperature on the front was 36.4℃, and the temperature on the back was 37.7℃.

After 25 minutes, the temperature on the front was 35.5℃ and on the back was 36.7℃. It can be seen that except for the top and bottom, the overall temperature distribution is relatively uniform.

After 40 minutes, the temperature on the front was 32.5℃ and on the back was 33.3℃.

Overall, as time goes by, the charging power decreases and the temperature becomes lower and lower. After 40 minutes, you can hardly feel the heat.

5. Wireless charging

The maximum power of Apple’s MagSafe charger is about 18.28W , the voltage is close to 9V, and the current is about 2A.

The maximum power of third-party chargers is only about 7W , the voltage is similar, but the current is very low.

6. Reverse charging

When connecting AirPods Pro using a 5A CC data cable, the output power is only about 1.26W , the voltage is about 5.2V, and the current is about 0.24A.
