Samsung is known for introducing innovative features, only to phase them out after a while. However, one of its past camera features might be making a comeback with the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
According to tipster Ice Universe, Samsung is considering equipping the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s primary rear camera with variable aperture. While Huawei and Xiaomi already offer similar technology on their flagship phones, Samsung was actually ahead of the curve when it first introduced dual-aperture with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.
Back then, the dual-aperture feature allowed the camera to switch between F1.5 and F2.4 depending on the scene. The F1.5 aperture let in more light, reducing noise but narrowing the field of view, making it ideal for low-light conditions. On the other hand, the F2.4 aperture was perfect for brighter, outdoor settings when a wider field of focus was needed. This feature continued in the Galaxy S10 series but was dropped with the Galaxy S20 lineup.
With the Galaxy S26 Ultra, Samsung appears ready to reintroduce variable aperture. However, the big question is whether it will offer true variable aperture with multiple settings, like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, or stick to a dual-aperture approach with just two settings, as seen with the Galaxy S9.
Samsung is rumored to deliver other notable camera improvements alongside the variable aperture. After introducing a 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom in the Galaxy S24 Ultra and upgrading the ultrawide camera to 50MP in the Galaxy S25 Ultra, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is expected to bump up the resolution of the 3x zoom telephoto camera to 50MP.
This means users could see even sharper, more detailed zoom shots—something photography enthusiasts will appreciate.
The Galaxy S26 Ultra isn’t just about camera innovations. It’s also rumored to feature a Silicon Carbon battery with up to 5,500mAh capacity, offering longer battery life. Additionally, Samsung could include a more power-efficient display that improves overall performance and usability.
If these rumors are true, the Galaxy S26 Ultra could be a game-changer, blending cutting-edge camera technology with improved battery and display capabilities. Keep an eye out for more updates as Samsung gears up to redefine smartphone photography once again!
