Huawei pioneered the wide folding form factor! A major battle is about to begin.

According to a report from Digital Chat Station, among the top 6 mobile phone manufacturers, Huawei has taken the lead in releasing a wide folding product, while Vivo has made it clear that it will not be making a large wide folding phone for the time being. The large wide folding models of the other manufacturers are expected to be unveiled in the second half of 2026 to the first half of 2027. Apple will become the first manufacturer to use a large wide folding phone with a 2nm chip.

Huawei will release the Pura X in March 2025, becoming the world’s first wide foldable phone, featuring an industry-first 16:10 wide screen design, with a starting price of 7,499 yuan.

At the X Fold6 launch event, vivo’s Vice President of Product, Huang Tao, clearly stated that vivo will focus its R&D efforts on large foldable screen products and will not invest too much in small foldable screen models at this stage, nor will it make large foldable phones for the time being.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone Ultra is expected to be released in September this year, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series, and will be powered by the A20 Pro chip manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process.

In the Android camp, Honor’s first wide folding phone has started testing. It is equipped with a 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen6 flagship chip, with a main screen size of about 7.6 inches and a secondary screen size of about 5.5 inches.

Xiaomi’s wide foldable phone has also passed 3C certification and is expected to be released as early as July. It will be the first to use the self-developed Xuanjie O3 chip and be equipped with the Surge OS 4 system, support 100W fast charging, and be equipped with 200-megapixel Leica imaging.

Wide folding has become the highest-end and most valuable product line for major brands, with some manufacturers even cutting budgets for other products to bet on wide folding.

Editor’s Review:

After Huawei’s Pura X opened up the wide-folding folding phone market, major players collectively entered the fray. Apple’s iPhone Ultra gained a hardware advantage with its 2nm chip and self-developed C2 baseband, while the Android camp competed for the first launch of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen6. Xiaomi’s MIX Fold5, on the other hand, built a differentiated competitive advantage with its self-developed O3 chip.

However, the production capacity of 2nm chips is limited. Whoever secures the first batch of supplies will gain control of the high-end market. The key to victory for foldable screens lies not in the screen form factor, but in who can be the first to complete the leap from application adaptation to native experience. This tough battle has only just begun.
