LG launches world’s first blue phosphorescent OLED panel

LG Display recently announced that it has successfully verified the commercial performance of blue phosphorescent OLED panels on a mass production line, becoming the first company in the world to achieve this milestone.

This achievement comes eight months after collaborating with UDC to develop blue phosphorescent technology, and is a key step towards the realization of the “dream OLED” display.

In the field of OLED panels, there are two main light emission modes: fluorescence and phosphorescence.

The luminous efficiency of fluorescence is only 25%, and although phosphorescence is technically difficult, it can achieve 100% luminous efficiency and consumes less power.

However, blue phosphorescence is difficult to achieve because it has the shortest wavelength and requires the most energy.

LG Display innovatively adopts a hybrid dual-stack tandem OLED structure that cleverly combines blue fluorescence and phosphorescence, which not only reduces the panel’s power consumption by about 15% but also ensures stability.

LG Display has applied for patents for the technology in the United States and South Korea, and will showcase the panel at SID Display Week 2025 in San Jose, California, on May 11.

This panel will be used in smartphones, tablets and other devices in the future.
