Samsung Rolls Out One UI 6 Update To Galaxy S22 Globally

Samsung has recently made strides in improving the speed of its Android updates, releasing a stable Android 14 build for its 2023 flagship models as early as October and now expanding its availability to the general public. Owners of the Galaxy S22 in Europe and the UK have reported receiving the stable Android 14 update.

Additionally, major U.S. carriers Verizon and AT&T have also rolled out the update. The new One UI 6 update introduces several new features, including a redesigned Quick Settings panel, updated camera app options, new clock styles, and improved system storage calculations. More Samsung devices are expected to receive this update soon.

In the past few years, Samsung has significantly accelerated its Android update process. This year, the company experienced some initial setbacks with the One UI 6 beta program for the Galaxy S23, including a few false starts.

After releasing nine beta builds, Samsung launched the stable Android 14 build for its 2023 flagships in late October. By mid-November, Samsung concluded the One UI 6 beta program for the Galaxy S22 and made the final firmware available to beta testers in a limited rollout. The company has now broadened the availability of the Galaxy S22’s Android 14 update to all users.

Galaxy S22 owners throughout Europe and the UK are now receiving the stable Android 14 update on their devices. In the U.S., both Verizon and AT&T have started rolling out the final One UI 6 build for S22 owners on their networks, as reported on Reddit. The DWK4 firmware, which is over 3.1GB in size, includes the November 2023 security patch.

While the Galaxy S23 received nine One UI 6 beta builds, the S22 underwent four beta firmware releases since the program’s inception in mid-September before receiving the stable update. The Galaxy S22’s first One UI 6 beta was released a week after the Galaxy A54 and A34, but its stable update has arrived earlier than these mid-range models.

To download and install the final Android 14 build, Galaxy S22 users can navigate to Settings > Software update > Download and install. The rollout of the update may take some time in other regions of the world, and carrier-locked units might face longer waits due to additional testing and certifications.

One UI 6 brings major new features, such as a redesigned Quick Settings panel, revamped emoji, updated camera app iconography with additional options, a camera widget, and a new system font. The update also introduces several new clock styles and placement options for lock screen customization. Additionally, it includes all the privacy and security features introduced by Google in Android 14.

After updating to Android 14, Galaxy S22 users might notice an increase in available free space. This change is due to One UI 6’s new method of calculating system storage. Previously, Samsung grouped all storage space not used by apps and media into the “System” partition, which made it appear as though the software was occupying a significant amount of space. However, this was not an accurate representation.

Samsung’s One UI 6 release schedule for Europe suggests that several more devices in its lineup will soon receive the stable Android 14 update, including the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Flip 5, Fold 4, and S21 series. While there may be slight delays due to final testing and other issues, this schedule provides a good indication of when other Galaxy phones will receive the latest Android version.
