TCL has made a significant stride in the smartphone market with the introduction of its NxtPaper 2.0 technology in early 2023. This innovative technology features a panel with a special coating that imparts a paper-like feel to the device. The TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G is one of the first phones to incorporate this technology, and it has recently been unboxed to reveal its unique features.
The TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G is an affordable smartphone that stands out for two primary reasons: its unique screen and next-generation connectivity. The device is powered by a Dimensity 6020 chipset, enabling 5G capabilities. The display is a 6.6-inch HD+ screen, but what sets it apart is the paper-like finish, offering a distinct tactile and visual experience.
The phone is equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery supporting 15W charging, a 50 MP rear camera, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a 3.5 mm audio jack alongside a USB-C port. Notably, the retail box does not include a charger, but any standard USB-A charger should suffice due to the phone’s modest charging speed.
The unboxing experience of the TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G is unique, with the retail box designed to resemble a book, complete with a leathery texture. This design choice emphasizes the device’s suitability for reading. Inside the box, along with the phone, are a USB-A to USB-C cable and a SIM tray ejector pin.
The TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G is lightweight with a plastic body that also mimics a paper-like feel. The device operates like any standard Android smartphone, but its screen is notably different from typical e-ink gadgets. The display is responsive and offers a new visual sensation, especially in its Nxtpaper mode, which includes Color paper and Ink paper settings. These settings adjust the display’s color vibrancy and brightness, making it easier on the eyes.
The Color paper mode tones down colors for a more subdued visual experience, while the Ink paper mode converts everything on the display to black and white. This mode, combined with the lack of blue light, provides a unique and comfortable viewing experience. It’s important to note that these effects are only applied to the panel and not the system itself.
The TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G is currently available in Europe for €250/£220 for the 6/256 GB memory variant. This smartphone is an excellent choice for those who prioritize eye comfort over performance, offering a unique blend of features that cater to a specific user base.
