Qualcomm Pays Huawei Patent Fees for First Time Covering 5G Technology: Both Parties Issue Public Responses

According to Fast Technology on October 5th, telecommunications giant Qualcomm has also begun paying patent fees to Huawei.

Huawei and Qualcomm today announced a multi-year, broad patent licensing agreement covering cross-licensing of patent portfolios across multiple technology areas, including 5G, computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and networking, as well as Qualcomm’s acquisition of certain US patents held by Huawei in computing, AI, and networking technologies. The transaction will close upon obtaining necessary regulatory approvals.

This agreement reflects the shared commitment of both parties to intellectual property rights and to patent licensing in accordance with the principles of fairness, reasonableness, and non-discrimination (FRAND).

Under the agreement, Qualcomm will acquire certain U.S. patents from Huawei related to computing, artificial intelligence, and networking technologies. Huawei stated that after the transaction is completed, the company’s total patent licensing agreements are expected to exceed $6.9 billion.

Regarding the aforementioned events, Huawei’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer, Alan Fan, stated that Huawei has continuously invested in basic research and development for decades, thereby establishing the company’s leading position in the mobile communications industry. This agreement with Qualcomm also reflects Huawei’s continued investment in innovation.

John Han, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm’s Technology Licensing Business, said: “Similarly, this agreement also reflects Qualcomm’s recognition of Huawei’s continued innovation capabilities and intellectual property in 5G and other technology fields.”

He added, “Qualcomm has a long history of investing in fundamental wireless technologies that have driven generations of mobile innovation and gained widespread recognition in the global wireless communications industry. This agreement further demonstrates the industry’s recognition of Qualcomm’s leadership in 5G technology.”

Huawei stated that its intellectual property licensing business has generated positive revenue since 2021, reflecting its long-term investment in research and development.
