Scrapped Xiaomi 17 Air Stood Out at Just 5.5mm Thin

A while back, Report from DigiTimes revealed that at least three smartphone brands in China decided to stop working on their ultra thin and lightweight phone projects. This decision reportedly came after the iPhone Air did not sell as well as expected. One of the companies mentioned in the report was Xiaomi. Today, we can see a prototype of the Xiaomi 17 Air which was originally planned to rival the iPhone Air in the market.

Tipster Bald Panda recently shared a video showing the chassis of the rumored Xiaomi 17 Air. The video highlights a prominent visor on the back which houses two camera modules. The back of the device is made of matte glass which gives it a subtle elegant appearance while the camera island has a shiny metallic finish that contrasts with the rest of the surface. Overall, the design appears to blend style with functionality.

According to the tipster, the Xiaomi 17 Air is expected to have a 6.59 inch display and a very slim profile of just 5.5mm, making it 0.1mm thinner than the iPhone Air. Digital Chat Station further suggested that the phone would come equipped with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 5 processor, a sub 6,000mAh battery and a 200MP main camera. Taken together, these features indicate that Xiaomi was aiming to create a device that is both incredibly thin and high performing.

Regardless of the plans, it seems the Xiaomi 17 Air will unfortunately not see a commercial release and will remain nothing more than a prototype unseen by the public.
