Apple officially announces new US titanium supplier; iPhone Duo supply shortages continue.

Apple has announced the addition of a U.S. titanium supplier for its new iPhone Duo, while also expanding U.S. production of camera components for the iPhone 18 Pro.

Apple announced on its website on Tuesday that it will invest up to $100 million over the next three years in the Pennsylvania-based Perryman Company to produce titanium for Apple products.

Apple specifically mentioned that Perryman melts, forges, and rolls titanium at its Houston, Pennsylvania plant, with at least 80% of the composition being recycled materials. This titanium is used to manufacture the iPhone Duo.

Apple says that titanium provides greater durability for devices like the iPhone Duo.

Last August, Apple launched the “Made in America” (AMP) program, pledging to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years.

At the time, Apple’s then-CEO Tim Cook presented Trump with a gift at a White House press conference, which ultimately led to the US government withdrawing its threat to “raise tariffs.”

Apple is currently facing severe supply constraints for its first foldable iPhone, which will officially go on sale in retail stores this Friday. Apple says pre-order demand has been “amazing,” but has not yet indicated whether it plans to increase production.

Morgan Stanley said that on the first day of pre-orders, the online estimated delivery time for some iPhone Duo models had been extended to about 14 weeks—the longest wait time for a new iPhone that the firm has recorded in a decade.

JPMorgan analysts predict that Apple will ship approximately 8 to 9 million Duo units this year, down from the previous forecast of approximately 10 million units, due to supply constraints.

For the Duo, a key question remains: given the unusually long wait before the phone’s official release, can Apple produce enough devices to meet market demand?

In addition to its partnership with Perryman, Apple also said on Tuesday that it will expand its collaboration with Qnity Electronics, which will produce advanced films for the iPhone 18 Pro’s variable aperture camera system.

This feature allows the phone’s main camera to adjust the amount of light entering the lens based on the shooting environment, giving users better control over exposure and depth of field.

Apple executive Sabih Khan said in a statement, “We are very excited to expand our partnership with these companies, which are producing advanced materials and components for our latest iPhone lineup in the United States.”

Apple also outlined investments with other partners, including a partnership with Broadcom to manufacture chips; a partnership with Corning to produce specialty glass; and a partnership with Amkor, which is building a semiconductor packaging and testing facility in Arizona.
