Apple is expected to unveil several new devices next week including a new entry level MacBook model known internally as J700, along with refreshed MacBook Pro models powered by the upcoming M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. However, these won’t be the only MacBook updates arriving this year. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is aiming to finally roll out touchscreen MacBook Pro models which are expected to arrive toward the end of 2026.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple is preparing to introduce new 14 inch and 16 inch MacBook Pro models, internally identified as K114 and K116. If the information is accurate, these devices would finally challenge Apple’s long held position against touchscreen laptops. This philosophy dates back to Steve Jobs who famously stated that “touch surfaces don’t want to be vertical” a remark that reinforced Apple’s resistance to adding touch displays to Macs.
The report indicates that the touchscreen MacBook Pro will offer distinct usage profiles tailored for either touch controls or standard cursor based navigation. With the touch mode activated, macOS will reportedly surface expanded menus and relevant on screen actions near the user’s touch points allowing for smoother and more accessible interaction directly through the display.
In addition to other upgrades, both of the upcoming MacBook Pro models are expected to feature OLED displays along with the introduction of Dynamic Island. Although speculation about OLED MacBooks has circulated for years, the addition of Dynamic Island represents a fresh twist. The report suggests that it will be located at the upper center portion of the display designed to be smaller than the current iPhone implementation and shaped like a punch hole cutout.
