Xiaomi 18 Pro officially announces native hardware-level privacy screen.

Fast Technology reported that Xiaomi officially announced today that its SuperPixel screen has officially entered the 2.0 era, with the Xiaomi 18 Pro series being the first to feature it.

The biggest feature of the new phone is that it combines flagship-level picture quality with native hardware-level privacy protection on a single screen, with outstanding performance in brightness, power consumption control, and privacy protection.

The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra features a native hardware privacy screen, which is a first for the phone. It reconstructs the optical structure from the bottom layer of the screen to achieve physical privacy protection. When enabled, people looking at the screen from the side will only see a black screen, while the display will remain undamaged when viewed from the front.

The principle is similar to Venetian blinds. Wide-viewing-angle and narrow-viewing-angle pixels are integrated inside the OLED panel. When privacy is enabled, only the positively emitting pixels with narrow viewing angle are allowed to shine through, while the side light is blocked by the grating, so that others cannot see the screen from the side.

However, the technology of the Galaxy S26 Ultra is not mature enough. Even without privacy mode, the display effect is still inferior to that of a regular screen.

Huawei’s later-released Lingdun privacy screen has a much better effect. It adopts an independent dual-pixel design, integrating two sets of light-emitting units in one pixel area, and only changing the angle of light when switching.

It remains clear and transparent when viewed directly, but at a large angle from the side, the screen becomes completely black, and others cannot see any content.

While maintaining almost no impact on clarity, color, and brightness, the viewing angle from the side has been significantly reduced through technical means.

It is expected that the Xiaomi 18 Pro series will also achieve a privacy protection effect with almost no impact on image quality.

It’s worth noting that many users hope the Xiaomi 18 Pro series won’t come standard with a privacy screen across the entire range, as this would force many users who don’t need it to pay a higher price. Xiaomi probably won’t choose this approach, but will instead offer a special configuration for users to choose from based on their needs.
