Apple grabs TSMC’s 2nm first launch rights: iPhone 17 series is stable

the main manufacturer of Apple chips, plans to start test production of 2nm chips next week, and plans to apply this advanced technology to Apple’s new chip production next year.

The trial production will be carried out at TSMC’s Baoshan plant, which received professional equipment designed for 2nm chip production in the second quarter of this year. Apple is expected to upgrade its customized chip technology to 2nm process in 2025.

Currently, the latest iPhone 15 Pro on the market uses the A17 Pro chip manufactured by TSMC’s 3nm process. This advanced process enables more transistors to be packaged in a smaller space, significantly improving performance and efficiency.

In the recently released new iPad Pro, Apple demonstrated its M4 chip for the first time. This chip uses an enhanced version of the 3nm process and is seen as a milestone in the transition to 2nm chips. Compared with the 3nm process, the 2nm chip is expected to bring a 10% to 15% performance improvement, while reducing power consumption by up to 30%.

TSMC plans to start mass production of 2nm chips next year and has been accelerating the process to ensure a stable yield rate before mass production. TSMC is currently the only manufacturer that can meet Apple’s requirements for the scale and quality of 2nm and 3nm chips.

For its 3nm chips, Apple has booked all of TSMC’s available production capacity, and TSMC also plans to triple the capacity of this node by the end of this year to meet the surging market demand.

According to past plans and forecasts, the first 2nm chip may debut in the iPhone 17 series in 2025.
