Apple has often been slower than some of its competitors, particularly Chinese smartphone makers when it comes to use the latest and most advanced camera technology. However, that could soon change. A new report indicates that Apple is exploring the use of multispectral imaging technology for its future iPhones.
According to the well known tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple has expressed interest in multispectral sensors and has even contacted suppliers about them. However, the tipster pointed out that the company has not begun testing the sensors yet.
Multispectral imaging works by detecting light in many different wavelength bands even those that are invisible to humans. Unlike regular RGB cameras which only detect red, green and blue light , multispectral imaging collects wider range of information. This extra data allow for more thorough understanding of objects and scenes being photographed.
If future iPhones are equipped with multispectral sensors, they may be able to separate materials in a scene effectively. This means the camera could identify objects and surfaces with greater accuracy leading to better depth perception and more realistic shots. In addition, the extra information collected by these sensors could improve overall image processing, make low light photography clearer and boost the phone’s ability to interpret visual information intelligently.
Although Digital Chat Station (DCS) does not mention which specific iPhone models might get multispectral sensors, the tipster repeated that the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to include a variable aperture 48MP main camera and a larger 48MP periscope telephoto lens. He also mentioned that Apple is testing a 200MP Samsung sensor for a future iPhone. These reports indicate that Apple is actively exploring new camera technologies to enhance photo quality in upcoming devices.
