Xiaomi Mi 15 Pro reduces the power consumption of a 2K screen to 1.5K

Xiaomi’s official Weibo, in the display industry, the reason why the improvement of display effects is continuous but slow is that under the same technology generation, the entire platform is like a seesaw: when one end goes up, the other end must come down.

On the seesaw, sitting opposite PPI is the ultimate villain in the mobile field: power consumption. This is also the core reason why we see that the screens of almost all Pro-level products have regressed this year. Some Pro products even have a PPI lower than the standard version of the same series.

For the Xiaomi 15 series, the Pro version uses a full-depth 2K quad-micro-curved screen. Compared with the previous generation’s 2K equal-depth quad-micro-curved screen, the power consumption of this generation has been greatly reduced.

After official testing, the power consumption of Xiaomi 14’s 1.5K screen is almost the same as that of Xiaomi 15 Pro’s 2K screen, and the power consumption of the entire screen has dropped by a full 24%.

To achieve such a feat, a combination of factors is needed, one of the major upgrades being the “dual micro-cavity” technology in Xiaomi’s customized M9 luminous material.

As we all know, the OLED screen has a multi-layer structure, and before the light is actually transmitted to your eyes, it must be reflected several times internally.

Intuitively, this internal reflection will cause “internal friction”, and the characteristic of light is that it has the characteristics of a “wave” during its propagation. It is by utilizing the characteristics of the wave that we can make it “resonate”.

By cleverly controlling the distance between the two poles of a pixel, light will be “superimposed” internally, thereby enhancing the intensity of the characteristic frequency. This is the “microcavity effect.”

The uniqueness of the Xiaomi 15 series lies in the fact that its screen panel has two layers of “microcavity”. According to the different wavelengths of RGB pixels, Xiaomi has designed corresponding dual microcavity structures to further “purify” the light and increase the luminous efficiency.

In this process, the current does not need to increase and the viewing angle will not be reduced. In other words, the brightness is improved at the same power consumption; or the power consumption is reduced at the same brightness.

Xiaomi also mentioned that the 4000 or 5000 nit brightness claimed by manufacturers in recent years looks no different to the naked eye than the one or two thousand nits a few years ago, because it is just a numbers game.

These ultra-high brightness levels are achieved when the APL (average percentage of pixels that are turned on) is only 1%, at extremely high outdoor brightness, and when playing HDR content.

Such harsh conditions are completely out of reach for users. The peak brightness of the Xiaomi 15 series is 3200nit, and the achievement condition is approximately 25% APL, which can greatly expand the triggering scenarios of peak brightness.
