Samsung could finally face a reality check in the foldable segment in 2026, when Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone. Reports suggest Apple may also adopt a front facing under display camera feature that Samsung introduced in its foldables.

Under Display Front Camera Expected in Upcoming Foldable iPhone

A research note from JP Morgan via MacRumours suggests that Apple’s first foldable iPhone may feature a 24MP under display camera (UDC). If true, this would mark Apple’s first use of such a camera in any product it has launched so far. However, the technology has been used for several years by other brands, including Samsung.

Samsung incorporated an under-display front camera in its Galaxy Z series phones from 2021 to 2024. The Galaxy Z Fold 3, Fold 4, Fold 5 and Fold 6 were equipped with a 4MP under display camera but its image quality did not match that of conventional front facing cameras. Therefore, for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung decided to replace the under display camera with a conventional hole-punch front camera.

Given that under display cameras typically offer lower image quality than conventional front facing cameras, it remains unclear how Apple will address this challenge and whether it can match current standards. A successful implementation by Apple could encourage Samsung to reconsider under display camera designs in future devices.
