According to ChannelNews, Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Ultra, is facing production constraints due to low yield rates and component supply. Initial production capacity will be very limited. The new product is planned to be launched in phases by region, with the first batch of stock prioritized for the US market.
Retailers and carriers in regions such as Australia have confirmed that they will not be able to obtain stock of this model during the initial launch phase.
The core reasons for the insufficient production capacity are threefold: first, the assembly process of the new hinge and flexible screen is complex, and the yield rate of the whole machine production continues to be under pressure; second, there is a gap in the delivery of some components; and third, quality problems were exposed in the testing of mass-produced models, which further reduced the number of finished machines that can be shipped.
According to leaks, the iPhone Ultra will adopt a 4:3 wide-folding design, with an unfolded inner screen size of 7.76 inches and a resolution of 2713 x 1920. The visual ratio is comparable to that of the iPad mini, providing a more spacious view when browsing documents in landscape mode, working in split-screen mode, or watching movies. It is also Apple’s first mobile phone product that focuses on a tablet-level large-screen experience.
It features a 5.49-inch external screen with a resolution of 2088 x 1422, allowing users to perform basic operations such as communication, message reply, and taking photos without opening the phone. The external screen retains only a single punch-hole front camera, eliminating the island design and resulting in a cleaner front appearance.
The body is made of lightweight titanium alloy frame, and the stress hinge area is made of stainless steel and die-cast liquid metal structure.
The weight of the whole machine is controlled within 250g, and the thickness is only 4.8mm when fully unfolded and 9.6mm when folded.
The hinge design for the iPhone Ultra is a key focus of Apple’s research and development efforts over many years. It incorporates internal metal stress-dispersing plates and a self-healing coating on the screen surface, significantly reducing screen creases caused by folding. It has also undergone hundreds of thousands of opening and closing durability tests to address the industry pain point of foldable screens becoming loose and developing noticeable creases after long-term use.
In terms of hardware configuration, the iPhone Ultra is equipped with TSMC’s 2nm A20 Pro flagship chip, comes standard with 12GB of RAM, and is deeply adapted to the iOS 27 exclusive foldable split-screen system, with comprehensive optimization of productivity functions such as multi-window parallelism and cross-application drag-and-drop functionality.
