iPhone Air 2 launch delayed: solely due to poor sales of the first generation.
The Information, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that Apple has indefinitely postponed the release of the second-generation iPhone Air, primarily due to the first-generation product’s underperformance in the market.
The report indicates that Apple recently notified its R&D team and supply chain partners that the iPhone Air 2 has been removed from the product development schedule, without providing a new release timeline. This model was originally planned for release next fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro/Max and a foldable iPhone.
It is understood that the suspended iPhone Air 2 was originally planned to further reduce the weight of the current model, while also equipping it with a larger capacity battery, and was expected to introduce the VC vapor chamber cooling technology originally slated to debut on the iPhone 17 Pro. Supply chain rumors also previously suggested that the model might be upgraded to a dual-camera system.
Although the project has been suspended, sources indicate that Apple has not completely canceled the product line. Some R&D teams and manufacturing partners are still working on it, but there is currently no clear timeline for mass production. This situation of keeping the project in place while maintaining an uncertain release date is considered quite unique in Apple’s product management.
In terms of production layout, the main contract manufacturer Foxconn has dismantled most of the iPhone Air production lines, leaving only one and a half production lines, and is expected to completely stop production by the end of this month. Another supplier, Luxshare Precision, ended production of this model at the end of October.
Some analysts believe that Apple may be undertaking a major redesign of the iPhone Air. Although the release date remains uncertain, there is still a glimmer of hope in the industry: the second-generation iPhone Air may debut in the spring of 2027, alongside the standard iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e.

Editor’s Review:
The delayed release of the iPhone Air 2 has undoubtedly dampened the hopes of consumers expecting a lightweight flagship. This clearly demonstrates that even a giant like Apple must face the rigorous tests of the market.
From the perspective of significant supply chain adjustments, this decision to postpone was decisive and aimed at minimizing losses. Whether Apple can use this window of opportunity to deliver a truly compelling performance in 2027 remains a major question mark.
