iPhone Air Finally Gains SIM Functionality via Impressive Mod
The iPhone Air holds the distinction of being the first iPhone model to be marketed globally as an eSIM only device eliminating the use of a traditional physical SIM card slot in favor of embedded digital SIM technology. However, a recent report out of China has painted a curious picture of an altered iPhone Air that does include a classic physical SIM card slot. Details about this project are scarce and somewhat vague but the reports claim that the modification was carried out by a specialty electronics retailer based in the bustling Huaqiangbei market in Shenzhen and that the added SIM slot was installed near the USB‑C port of the handset.

In order to complete this unusual modification, the engineers and enthusiasts involved had to employ several inventive solutions to work within the tight internal confines of the iPhone Air. One of the key adaptations involved swapping out the Air’s standard Taptic Engine which generates vibration feedback for a smaller more compact motor. Despite its reduced size this new motor was carefully chosen to preserve the essential haptic feedback features that users expect ensuring the device still feels responsive during use. The freed up space inside the device was then leveraged to accommodate a SIM card reader adjacent to the physical SIM slot, effectively allowing the modified Air to function completely like a standard iPhone with both eSIM and physical SIM capabilities.

One of the image circulating online show the modified iPhone Air successfully running a China Telecom SIM card demonstrating that it can function with a traditional carrier in addition to its eSIM capabilities. Another image capture the device in the process of making a phone call confirming that the modification has not hindered its basic telephony functions. Report indicate that the modified Air can also connect to 5G networks without any noticeable issues providing the high speed mobile data performance expected from a flagship Apple device. Perhaps most remarkable is that the phone has managed to retain its IP68 ingress protection rating meaning it remains highly resistant to dust and water even after extensive internal adjustments. The iPhone 17 Air comes in multiple specifications to suit different needs and budgets: a 256GB model paired with 12GB of RAM is available for $849.92 (approximately €874.19) and a higher capacity 512GB model also with 12GB of RAM, is priced at $999.00 (around €1,149.00).
