Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6/Flip6 compared with previous generations
On the evening of July 10th, Beijing time, Samsung held the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, bringing a new generation of folding screen new products Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6, which will be officially launched on the 24th of this month. So what are the upgrades and changes of these two new folding screen phones compared with the previous generation? Let’s take a look today.
The frame is straighter, lighter and thinner
First of all, the appearance design of Galaxy Z Fold6 is quite different from that of the previous generation. Its middle frame has become straighter, especially the transition part of the corners, which has almost become a right angle, making the whole machine look more linear. At the same time, it uses improved armored aluminum material to further improve durability.
The external screen size has been increased from 6.2 inches to 6.3 inches, and the screen ratio has been increased from 23.1:9 to 22.1:9. Although it is still very slender, it will be closer to a candy-bar phone in terms of visual perception. The internal screen is still 7.6 inches, and the peak brightness has been increased to 2600 nits. Both screens support 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate.
The dimensions of the Galaxy Z Fold6 when unfolded are 153.5×132.6×5.6mm, which is squarer and a little thinner than the previous generation’s 154.9×129.9×6.1mm. When folded, it is 153.5×68.1×12.1mm, which is also squarer and 1.3mm thinner than the previous generation’s 154.9×67.1×13.4mm. At the same time, the body weight is 239g, which is 14g lighter than the previous generation, which is still a huge improvement.
There are also some minor changes to its rear imaging module, with the lens circle becoming more prominent.
It is worth mentioning that the Galaxy Z Fold6 supports IP48 level dust and water resistance this time. Compared with the previous generation IPX8, it has improved its protection against dust. Level 4 dust resistance can block the entry of solid particles with a diameter greater than 1.0mm and above, further improving its durability.
The hinge has also been strengthened to better absorb impacts, and the creases on the folding screen have been reduced through “reinforcement layer” technology.
The changes in the Galaxy Z Flip6 are relatively small. It still continues the previous 3.4-inch large external screen and 6.7-inch internal screen. The dimensions of the folded state are 85.1×71.9×14.9mm, which is a little thinner than the previous generation’s 85.1×71.9×15.1mm. The weight is still 187g.
In addition, the rear lens part will use a Deco ring in the same color as the body, making the lens and body more unified.
In terms of color, Galaxy Z Fold6 offers three colors: starry silver, light rose pink, and cold night blue, as well as two Samsung Mall exclusive colors: space-time black and vanilla white; Galaxy Z Flip6z will offer four colors: summer foam blue, passion yellow, green mint, and starry night silver, as well as three Samsung Mall exclusive colors: vanilla white, space-time black and peach pink.
Small folding image upgrade
In terms of imaging, the Galaxy Z Flip6 has undergone a major upgrade. Its main camera has finally been upgraded from 12 million pixels, which has been used for several years, to 50 million pixels (probably the same as the Galaxy S24). It can support 2x zoom with optical quality, and the imaging capabilities have been significantly improved. The ultra-wide angle is still 12 million pixels, and the front camera is 10 million pixels.
There is no change on the Galaxy Z Fold6, it still has a combination of 50-megapixel main camera + 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle + 10-megapixel 3x telephoto, and the front camera is 10 million pixels.
Core configuration regular iteration
In terms of core configuration, Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 are both equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen3 for Galaxy. The former still has 12GB of memory and provides 512GB/1TB of storage space. While the body is lighter and thinner, it still has the same 4400mAh battery as the previous generation, but it still supports 25W wired fast charging; the latter has increased from 8GB of memory to 12GB, providing 256GB and 512GB of storage space, and the battery capacity has been increased from 3700mAh of the previous generation to 4000mAh while the body weight remains unchanged, and it also supports 25W wired fast charging.
New AI features are available
AI can be said to be the top priority of this conference, and Samsung spent a lot of time introducing new AI features. Samsung and Google have a very deep cooperation. Google’s Gemini has directly become the voice assistant in Samsung phones. You can call Geminij by “Hey Google”, use voice or text, and even send it a video link and then ask it questions.
It can also help you write emails, copywriting, generate pictures, etc.
When we turn on the camera, there is no need to take a photo, AI can directly recognize the information in the viewfinder and translate it.
You can also take a photo of a math formula, and AI will recognize it and help you find a solution, or turn it into a note. When we take a photo of the starry sky, AI can also help us find the constellations in it.
In terms of image generation, we can generate beautiful pictures by just drawing a few lines;
You can also paint on existing photos and generate other scenes;
Photos in the album can also be generated into various anime-style pictures through AI.
In addition, there are functions such as AI recording transcription, meeting content summary, and real-time translation.
Price increase is inevitable
Regarding the price, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 are priced at $1,899.99 and $1,099.99 respectively, both $100 more expensive than their predecessors. The current domestic pioneer versions start at 14,999 yuan and 8,999 yuan respectively, 1,000 yuan and 500 yuan more expensive than last year, so the final price of this year’s domestic version should be 13,999 yuan and 7,999 yuan, 1,000 yuan and 500 yuan more expensive than the previous generation.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the upgrades to the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 are not that big. The former has some changes in design and is lighter and thinner, while the latter mainly upgrades the imaging configuration and improves the shooting experience. The core hardware is a relatively conventional iteration, but the Flip has been upgraded to 12GB of memory and has a larger battery, which is quite good. A price increase is inevitable.
The AI functions are indeed rich and powerful, but which ones the domestic version can support will have to wait until the domestic launch conference on July 17th to be announced, so everyone can look forward to it.
