Catching up in the field of AI! Apple plans to revolutionize Siri and officially release it in 2026
Apple Inc is working to develop a more conversational version of its Siri digital assistant, aiming to catch up with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other voice services, people familiar with the matter told CNN.
The new Siri, details of which have not yet been released, uses more advanced large language models (LLMs) that allow for back-and-forth conversations, the people said, adding that the system can also handle more complex requests in a faster manner.
It is reported that the improved Siri will rely on a new Apple artificial intelligence model to interact more like humans and handle tasks in a way that is closer to ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
It will also allow for more precise control of third-party apps, and the new version of Siri will be able to take advantage of “Apple Intelligence” features, such as the ability to write and summarize text.
The revamp of the 13-year-old Siri service is part of Apple’s effort to catch up in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The company launched the much-hyped “Apple Smartphone” last month, but it still lacks many of the features offered by other tech giants.
It is reported that this new voice assistant will eventually be added to the “Apple Intelligence” system, and its developers have named it “LLM Siri.” LLMs are the building blocks of generative artificial intelligence, which requires large amounts of data to recognize patterns and answer questions.
According to Apple’s past practices, the company will test the upgraded software on iPhones, iPads and Mac computers as a separate application. People familiar with the matter said that Apple plans to announce the adjustment as early as 2025 as part of the upcoming iOS 19 and MacOS 16 software updates, which are internally named Luck and Cheer respectively.
However, like the new features that “Apple Smart” will launch this fall, these new features will not be immediately included in next year’s hardware devices. People familiar with the matter said that Apple currently plans to release the new Siri to consumers as early as spring 2026, about a year and a half later.
Considering that Apple is still several months away from announcing the plan, the release time and features may still change. In addition to the above-mentioned people familiar with the matter, Apple’s job recruitment information released in recent weeks actually hinted that it plans to launch a more conversational Siri .
“You’ll join a team that’s redefining computing, creating breakthrough conversational assistant technologies for large-scale systems and new client devices, alongside those building intelligent assistants,” one job posting reads. Others call for knowledge of conversational AI interfaces and the underlying technologies.
Apple has wanted to give Siri more conversational capabilities for years but has been unable to find the right technology. More than a year ago, Apple moved the team responsible for how Siri interacts with users from the company’s artificial intelligence division to the division responsible for software interfaces. The team is now led by Alan Dye, the company’s vice president of human interface design.
