According to Fast Technology on July 21, Apple’s first foldable screen phone, the iPhone Ultra, is expected to be released in September this year. As Apple’s first product to enter the foldable screen market, it is also considered one of the most important new iPhone products this year.
According to Macworld, developers have discovered new code related to multiple batteries in the iOS 27 developer preview Beta 4 released by Apple today, revealing for the first time the dual-cell design of the iPhone Ultra.
The relevant code is located in the iPhone’s battery health feature, which not only mentions that there are multiple batteries inside the device, but also involves the health status of multiple batteries, performance degradation, and verification of the original battery.
All currently available iPhones use a single-battery design, and the related descriptions within the iOS system have always used the singular form.
This is the first time Apple has used the plural form of “battery” in its code, indicating that it is adapting the system for new devices that use a dual-cell design.
Macworld speculates that this code is likely intended for the iPhone Ultra.
Previous reports indicated that the iPhone Ultra would be equipped with two battery cells, with capacities of 1921mAh and 2962mAh respectively, for a total capacity of 4883mAh. The two batteries are expected to be placed on the sides of the foldable body.
It is worth noting that the iOS 27 code also specifically mentions the situation where “one of the batteries” could not be verified as an original Apple battery.
This means that the iPhone Ultra may be able to detect the health status of two battery cells separately.
If one of the battery cells shows significant degradation, Apple may only need to replace the faulty cell instead of the entire battery assembly, potentially reducing repair costs.
However, this repair method is currently based on speculation using system code, and the final solution will depend on information officially released by Apple.
In fact, this is not the first time that iOS 27 has leaked clues about Apple’s foldable phone.
In the first developer beta of iOS 27, developers discovered several pieces of code related to foldable devices, such as foldState and angleDegrees.
Among them, foldState can be used to determine whether the device is currently in a closed, unfolded, or semi-folded state; angleDegrees can read the real-time opening and closing angle of the hinge, providing support for the system interface and interaction under different folding angles.
Based on previous leaks, the iPhone Ultra is expected to feature a custom Samsung LTPO OLED flexible screen. To improve crease performance, the new phone will also use a liquid metal hinge, whose material strength is said to be 2.5 times that of titanium alloy.
However, liquid metal processing is quite difficult, with an industry yield rate of about 65%, which may become a major challenge in the mass production of new machines.
