Competing with Apple! Google’s self-developed chip Tensor G5 is ready to go: TSMC foundry
many people’s first impression of Google may be the Android operating system rather than the Pixel phone.
Although the sales volume of Pixel phones is not high, Google attaches great importance to this business and even develops its own mobile phone SoC.
According to media reports, Google began to customize the Tensor processor from 2021. This chip is based on the Samsung Exynos and adds some Google modules, such as the NPU (neural network unit) used to enhance the AI performance of mobile phones.
Therefore, the manufacturing process it uses is the same as Exyons and it is a product of Samsung’s technology.
However, Google did not stop there, but will launch chips designed entirely by itself. The first Google self-developed chip is Google Tensor G5, and next year’s Pixel 10 series will be the first to be equipped with this processor.
It is reported that Tensor G5 is manufactured by TSMC and uses TSMC’s latest InFO POP packaging technology, which is the industry’s first 3D wafer-level fan-out packaging. Google has already obtained Tensor G5 samples and started verification.
Industry insiders said that Apple has two killer weapons: self-developed chips and iOS. Now Google has Tensor and Android, and its trump cards are very close to Apple. This may further enhance Google’s position in the industry. This is the advantage of Google’s self-developed chips.
