How Slim Is the Galaxy Z TriFold? The Answer Changes Depending on Where You Look

Galaxy Z Trifold

Over the past few years, most of the smartphone brands outside of China didn’t put much effort making their devices extremely thin. Companies were satisfied with a middle ground where phones were thin enough while still offering good battery life and features. But in 2025, this trend changed. Samsung has now returned to focusing on thin designs and is proudly introducing the very slim Galaxy Z TriFold.

Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z TriFold as its first device with two hinges and it’s 12.9mm thick in its folded form. At first glance, this might not sound impressive compared to the 8.9mm Galaxy Z Fold 7. But the TriFold folds twice, which naturally increases its thickness. When the device is fully opened, it becomes extremely slim, reaching just 3.9mm at its thinnest spot. Still, the TriFold isn’t a device with a consistent profile. Even though one side is 3.9mm, other sides are thicker, so the actual measurement depends on where you check.

Wondering How Thin It Is? Here Are Three Correct Answers

One of the most unusual things about Samsung’s first dual-hinged phone is that all three sections of the device have different thicknesses. Because of this, it’s difficult to give one clear measurement for the whole phone. Based on current details:

The thinnest section is the left side when the phone is unfolded and it measures 3.9mm.

The middle section which features the cover screen is slightly thicker at 4.2mm.

The right panel where the side buttons and camera module are located is 4.0mm thick without counting the camera housing.

All of these measurements do not include the extra thickness added by the pre-installed protective film. Based on the listed figures, it’s obvious that the Galaxy Z TriFold does not maintain the same thin profile from one end to the other. The middle section is the thickest point, and the thickness gradually decreases toward both the left and right sides.

Galaxy Z TriFold’s Camera Bump Is Bigger Than the Phone

Finally, there’s one more quirk of the Galaxy Z TriFold worth mentioning: the camera housing seems to be thicker than the phone itself. Samsung hasn’t officially shared the phone’s total thickness including the camera, so we can’t say for sure. Still, the image below gives a pretty clear idea of how this unusual design looks in real life.

Unless you include unusual or experimental devices like the Galaxy S4 Zoom from 2013, the Galaxy Z TriFold is Samsung’s first phone where the camera housing is actually thicker than the phone itself when it’s fully unfolded. That doesn’t mean the phone has the most advanced camera ever. While it does feature a 200MP main sensor, its zoom performance isn’t particularly impressive. What really catches your eye is how thin the rest of the phone is making the camera housing look even more dramatic. We’ve officially reached a moment in smartphone design where the body can be thinner than the camera itself. Of course, the Galaxy Z TriFold isn’t your average phone, so don’t expect this to become a common trend anytime soon.
