Next Generation Snapdragon May Drive Up Galaxy S27 Ultra Pricing

The cost of premium smartphone processor has been climbing consistently over the last few years increasing pressure on smartphone manufacturer. This trend is placing financial strain on smartphone brands forcing them to choose between increasing consumer prices or settling for thinner profit margins. Reports suggesting that Qualcomm’s next generation Snapdragon processor will be particularly costly only add to these concerns, potentially driving the price of premium phones such as the Galaxy S27 Ultra even higher.

According to well known tipster Digital Chat Station, Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship Snapdragon lineup could include two separate variants identified by the model numbers SM8950 and SM8975. The SM8950 is expected to debut as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 while the SM8975 could be positioned as a higher end Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. If accurate, both chipsets would leverage TSMC’s second generation 2nm process node known as N2P which promises improved performance and efficiency.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro Could Power the Galaxy S27 Ultra

The Galaxy S27 Ultra may be powered by a variant of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro that is manufactured using Samsung Foundry’s second generation 2nm (SF2P) process.

Both upcoming chipsets are rumored to feature an octa core CPU design built around a 2 + 3 + 3 core layout. The SM8950 which is expected to be the less powerful option may come equipped with LPDDR5X memory, a reduced amount of cache and a scaled back version of Qualcomm’s top tier Adreno GPU. On the other hand, the SM8975 is rumored to step things up with LPDDR6 memory, a larger cache and a fully featured Adreno GPU designed for maximum performance.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro reportedly deliver impressive performance but come with a significantly higher price. Its pricing could push smartphone brands to use the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 in their base ‘Plus’ and ‘Pro’ high end phones, while reserving the Gen 6 Pro variant for ‘Ultra’ devices. Moreover brands could be forced to increase the prices of their Ultra phones.

The expected rise in prices can largely be attributed to two key issues: the increasing costs involved in producing chips using cutting edge semiconductor manufacturing technologies as well as the persistent global shortage of memory particularly RAM chips.

Alongside the introduction of a newer, more powerful chip paired with a superior cooling solution, the Galaxy S27 lineup is expected to feature a primary camera with a variable aperture a state of the art main sensor and significantly improved ultrawide sensor, all aimed at elevating photography and video capabilities.
