Samsung May Bring 24MP Mode to Its Stock Camera App

Samsung’s smartphones boast powerful cameras, often with resolutions of 48MP, 50MP, or even 200MP. Yet, by default, Samsung’s Camera app captures photos in 12MP. Why? This mode uses pixel-binning and advanced multi-frame processing to deliver high-quality images with smaller file sizes, striking the perfect balance for most users. While the app does allow you to shoot in full resolution, choosing this option sacrifices the benefits of pixel-binning and extra image processing, which is why many people stick with the default 12MP setting.

Apple, however, offers a middle ground. In addition to 12MP and full resolution modes, iPhones let users take photos in 24MP, a sweet spot that combines pixel-binning, advanced processing, and more detail—without increasing file size too much.

Interestingly, Samsung phones are also capable of capturing images in 24MP, but only through the ExpertRAW app, available for select models like the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S25. Since this requires users to open a separate app, many find it inconvenient for day-to-day use. This could change soon, as Samsung appears to be considering adding a 24MP option directly within the stock Camera app.

On Samsung’s Community forum in Korea, a user suggested that Samsung should integrate the 24MP mode into its default Camera app. A moderator responded positively, saying the idea would be considered. This suggests the feature may soon make its way to Samsung’s Camera app.

If this happens, we hope the 24MP mode will be available across all Galaxy phones with camera sensors of 48MP or higher. For flagship models like the Galaxy S25 Ultra, this could enable users to take 24MP photos even from ultrawide and periscope cameras, which currently feature 50MP resolution.
