This phone features a differentiated design, using a matte OLED screen to provide an e-reader-like viewing experience, and is the successor to the Nxtpaper 40/60 series.

The P80 Ultra is the first to combine Nxtpaper technology with the characteristics of OLED, achieving deeper blacks, higher contrast, and richer colors. While adding an always-on display, it retains the screen touch and monochrome eye protection mode of the Nxtpaper product line.

Tech media outlet The Verge experienced the P80 Ultra at the TCL IFA booth (Nxtpaper series products are not available in China). The editor claimed that this screen brings an all-round improvement to the Nxtpaper product line: the screen content is always clearly visible in both indoor low-light environments and outdoor high-light environments, with lower flicker and blue light content than other Android phones. Not only are the viewing angles excellent and the anti-glare performance outstanding, but the screen touch is also first-class, and the scrolling operation is incredibly smooth.

As Nxtpaper’s latest model, the P80U features a dedicated switch on the side, allowing for a one-click switch to a paper-reading experience, and even access to the more advanced Max Ink monochrome eye-protection mode. This not only eliminates interference from most apps but also minimizes power consumption, achieving the dual function of a phone and an e-reader.

Despite the P80 Ultra’s impressive camera module specifications, The Verge’s editors didn’t find the image quality particularly outstanding, and the processor performance was rather average, with noticeable lag during daily use. The P80 Ultra’s strength lies in its screen and dedicated tuning; The Verge believes that with the release of the iPhone Duo, more and more Android models will adopt matte screens.
