According to Fast Technology on October 23, one of the biggest changes in the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable screen phone, is that it abandons Face ID and adopts side fingerprint recognition instead, combining the fingerprint sensor with the power button.

Images posted by blogger “Alpaca’s Pajamas” show that the iPhone Duo has a UI prompt bar on the side fingerprint area, but this fingerprint UI prompt bar is not aligned with the physical button. Netizens commented that it’s unsettling for those with OCD. Although this is just a minor detail, for a flagship product priced at 15,999 yuan, it can easily amplify user discomfort.

It is reported that the iPhone Duo will abandon Face ID and use Touch ID on the side, making it the first high-end iPhone to abandon 3D face recognition since the iPhone X.

This adjustment is a hard trade-off brought about by the foldable body. The Face ID TrueDepth module is too large, while the iPhone Duo has to balance the internal and external screens, hinge, and thin and light body, making it extremely difficult to accommodate the entire 3D structured light hardware.

If Face ID is only equipped on the inner screen, the unlocking experience will be disrupted when the outer screen is closed; if separate modules are added to each screen, costs and device thickness will become uncontrollable. Under the premise of unchanged security standards, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor becomes the optimal solution for balancing both open and closed forms.

It’s worth mentioning that tech blogger Mark Gurman revealed in the latest episode of the “Power On” podcast that the Apple iPhone Duo 2 prototype tested Face ID and used an under-display solution, but it’s still uncertain whether it will eventually be commercialized.

If this solution matures, the unlocking experience of future foldable iPhones may undergo further changes.
