Xiaomi Mi 18 screen bezels reduced to 1mm: the narrowest small-screen flagship ever.
According to a blogger’s report on July 8th, thanks to continuous breakthroughs in advanced packaging technology, the Xiaomi 18 will further narrow its screen bezel to 1mm, which is more aggressive than the 1.18mm of the Xiaomi 17. This will not only make it the flagship with the narrowest bezel in Xiaomi’s history, but also the small-screen flagship with the narrowest bezel in the industry.
It is reported that the Xiaomi 18 will have a 6.4-inch screen, a slight increase from the previous generation’s 6.3-inch screen. The screen supplier is expected to be CSOT (China Star Optoelectronics Technology). The phone will use a new generation of LIPO packaging technology, short for Low-Injection Pressure Overmolding.
Its core principle is to use liquid polymer materials to encapsulate and solidify the screen’s ribbon cable area, tightly bonding the polymer material, screen, and phone frame. Compared to traditional packaging solutions, LIPO eliminates the screen’s buffer zone, thus significantly reducing the screen bezel width.
Moreover, LIPO offers superior protection and consistency, and can effectively improve the overall waterproof rating of the device. Currently, many domestic flagship models have adopted this packaging technology.
In terms of configuration, the Xiaomi 18 series will be the first to be equipped with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8E6 flagship platform. The Xiaomi 18 and Xiaomi 18 Pro will be equipped with the standard version of the Snapdragon 8E6 chip, while the top-of-the-line Xiaomi 18 Pro Max will be the first to be equipped with the higher-spec Snapdragon 8E6 Pro chip.
It’s worth mentioning that the release schedule for the Xiaomi 18 series has been adjusted – the Xiaomi 18 Pro series with higher configurations will be launched first in September this year, while the standard Xiaomi 18 will be released later. However, the time interval between the release of the two models is not expected to be too long.
Regarding pricing, the Xiaomi 18 series will see a significant price increase due to the overall rise in upstream supply chain costs. This is not a unilateral brand decision by Xiaomi, but rather an inevitable result of cost pressures faced by the entire Android camp; all major Android brands will simultaneously raise their prices.
