iPhone 18 series confirmed to be testing under-display Face ID: First release on Lingdongdao.
Since the iPhone 14 Pro introduced the Island display, this form factor has been used for four generations of products, and it’s time for Apple to squeeze out some new improvements.
According to blogger “Smart Pikachu”, the iPhone 18 series materials confirm that it is testing under-display 3D face recognition, finally achieving the hiding of the Face ID component.

Apple has actually been developing this technology for many years, initially planning to debut it on the iPhone 16 Pro series in 2024. However, due to unsatisfactory test results, the technology has been repeatedly postponed.
Thanks to the under-display Face ID, the size of the iPhone 18 series’ screen-to-body ratio will be greatly reduced, making it the iPhone with the highest screen-to-body ratio in history, significantly reducing its impact on gaming and movie watching.
It’s worth noting that the standard iPhone 17 this year has already offered very minor upgrades, and the standard iPhone 18 next year is expected to have only minor improvements and will not feature this new technology.
The iPhone 18 Pro series will exclusively feature under-display Face ID and will debut a smaller version of the Smart Island display, becoming a major upgrade for the Pro models and expected to stimulate a lot of demand for upgrades.
