Apple is starting to catch up: Siri is about to be reborn

Apple reportedly wants to make Siri more conversational and intelligent by using “advanced large language models” similar to AI competitors like Chat-GPT, but that move won’t be ready until 2026.

The so-called “LLM” is the abbreviation of “Large Language Model”. It is a language model trained using deep learning algorithms, designed to understand and generate human language. LLM usually contains tens of billions or even hundreds of billions of parameters, and is trained on large amounts of text data to enable the model to capture the complexity and nuances of language.

LLM is not as far-fetched as it seems. It has even been widely used by us, and most of you have probably experienced it already.

Whether you are using a search engine to perform AI searches, having a conversation with a virtual assistant or having it help you get work done, or you may have received AI customer service or used generative AI for content creation, LLM has shown potential in many aspects. In essence, it is the embodiment of capabilities such as text generation, question-answering systems, machine translation, text summarization, emotion perception, and language understanding.

When Apple was first rumored to be entering the AI field, one thing was clear to everyone: Apple would not release a chatbot like Chat-GPT. Although Apple Intelligence was officially introduced at WWDC, Apple was not satisfied with the status quo.

As it stands, Apple has to rely on OpenAI’s ChatGPT in iOS 18.2 to achieve more complex tasks. There is no doubt that
Apple wants users to be able to talk to their personal assistant better and make Siri’s responses more human-like. Therefore, given Apple’s tone, this will definitely not be a long-term solution, and Apple will take control of everything.

Previously, the technology website AppleInsider reported on Apple’s AI testing tools, namely 1UP and Smart Replies Tester. The 1UP application is used to test text-related generative AI functions.

It is worth mentioning that people familiar with the application told the media that it directly references Apple’s long-rumored internal LLM or Large Language Model (Ajax).

It is foreseeable that the new Siri can handle back-and-forth conversations with users, and LLM will drive Siri’s transformation into a chatbot or even “Jarvis” (expected in the future).

Since Apple Intelligence debuted in iOS 18.1, Apple has not integrated any real Apple Intelligence features with Siri.

For users, Siri has not changed much. As for AI functions, it cannot be used independently. It is still a connection channel for other tools such as Google Search or ChatGPT. The way to control smart home, set timers or make calls has not changed much. For users in China, they still need to wait to experience Apple Intelligence.

The good news is that iOS 18 has laid the foundation for a more interactive and proactive Siri. Apple has previously opened the “App Intent System” test to developers. According to the developer documentation released by Apple, developers can provide the content on the screen to Siri and Apple Intelligence to test the app intent system, which means that users will be able to send any activity on the screen to AI for analysis.

This system will allow Siri to access some of the user’s application functions and user data on the device, so as to analyze and perceive the user’s scenario and needs based on these contents, achieve situational awareness and execute the user’s commands.

As we mentioned earlier, Apple has begun developing Siri based on LLM, which may debut in iOS 19 in early 2026. As usual, Apple should release the new iOS 19 during WWDC25 in June 2025. If the rumors are true, Siri LLM will not be available until iOS 19 is officially installed (iPhone 17 series released in September 2025).

Jarvis in the movie can have extremely natural, fluent and in-depth conversations with humans. Not only can it understand various complex language expressions, but it can also respond accurately according to the context and tone. At the same time, as Iron Man’s right-hand man, Jarvis has strong multi-tasking and coordination capabilities.

More importantly, Jarvis has a strong learning ability and can continuously optimize and improve its performance… At this stage, not to mention Apple’s Siri, even the most advanced AI model in the world cannot achieve such operations. To truly realize the ultimate intelligent assistant like Jarvis, we still face many technical and social challenges.

However, with the continuous advancement of technology and in-depth research on large AI models, future smart assistants will have the opportunity to break through existing limitations and gradually approach or even surpass the level of intelligence represented by “Jarvis”.

Perhaps in the near future, major models and AI assistants including Siri will become the Jarvis in mobile phones, bringing more convenience to our daily lives and even, to some extent, bringing about profound changes in human lifestyles.
