Huawei Mate 80 will be equipped with side ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and will be launched in December

Recently, a digital blogger broke the news that Huawei’s Mate 80 series is expected to be equipped with self-developed side ultrasonic fingerprint technology. If true, it will be an important breakthrough for Huawei in the field of biometrics.
According to the blogger, Huawei’s side ultrasonic fingerprint technology is being promoted and is expected to enter the trial production stage in the second half of the year. Previously, Huawei was restricted from using third-party ultrasonic solutions such as Qualcomm and turned to independent research and development.
In November 2023, Huawei announced the “ultrasonic fingerprint recognition module” patent (CN117058725A), which significantly improved recognition accuracy and security by improving sensor design and signal processing algorithms, laying the foundation for the implementation of the technology.

Ultrasonic fingerprints are regarded as the future direction of fingerprint recognition technology because of their advantages such as high penetration, resistance to stain interference, and liveness detection.
However, patent barriers of companies such as Qualcomm have long restricted domestic manufacturers. If Huawei’s self-developed solution is successfully commercialized, it will break the foreign monopoly and achieve independent control of core components.
In addition, the side design can take into account both screen integrity and convenience, and is more suitable for new structures such as folding screens than traditional under-screen fingerprints.

Leaked information shows that Huawei’s Mate 80 series may become the first model equipped with this technology. If combined with 3D face recognition (the traditional advantage of the Mate series), it may form a “double insurance” biometric solution.
The Pura 80 series released in the first half of the year may adopt a differentiated strategy: the standard version continues to use the side capacitive fingerprint, and the Pro version tries the under-screen ultrasonic solution.
According to supply chain information, the mass production schedule of the Mate 80 series is consistent with the iteration rhythm of previous years, and it will most likely be released in December.
