Samsung develops new OLED panel: power consumption is less than half of current mobile phone screens

Samsung is developing OLED displays without polarizer films, which consume less than half of the power of current mobile phone screens.

Once this breakthrough screen technology is realized, we will see thinner and lighter smartphones, significantly improved battery life, and foldable screen models will also benefit from this technology.

It is reported that the polarizer-free OLED uses a screen stacking structure that can block the reflection of external light, which can replace the core material of the display screen – the polarizer.

When the ambient light is strong, the display effect and contrast of the OLED screen will be greatly reduced due to the reflected light, making it more difficult to see the screen clearly.

Therefore, the OLED screen needs to use a polarizer to block the reflected light, but while blocking the reflected light, part of the light emitted by the OLED screen has to be blocked by it. As a result, the polarizer reduces the transmittance of the screen.

The purpose of polarizer-free OLED is to lower the driving current of the OLED screen while maintaining the screen viewing brightness, thereby reducing power consumption and extending the service life of the OLED screen.
