The iPhone 18e continues its relentless pursuit of a 60Hz notch display:
According to Fast Technology on November 3, Apple will launch the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e in the first half of next year.
According to blogger Dingjiao Digital, the iPhone 18e will continue to use the 60Hz notch screen design and will not feature a dynamic display. The main upgrades will focus on the A20 series chip. In other words, the changes in this new phone are more reflected in core performance than screen form factor.
As is well known, Apple has always had a clear hierarchy regarding screen refresh rate and front form factor. In Apple’s view, these two factors are important baselines for differentiating mid-range and high-end models, and key configurations for differentiating product positioning.
Looking back at previous generations of products, this logic becomes clear. The iPhone 14 Pro series was the first to use 120Hz ProMotion and Dynamic Island, while the standard iPhone 14 at the same time still had a notch screen and a 60Hz refresh rate.
With the standard iPhone 15, the front finally upgraded to the “Island” display, but the refresh rate remained at 60Hz; it wasn’t until the iPhone 17 that Apple finally introduced a 120Hz high refresh rate. This demonstrates that Apple has consistently maintained a clear hierarchy in its screen configurations.
The iPhone 18e follows the same approach. It is positioned lower than the standard version, continues to use the cheaper 60Hz notch screen solution, and will be upgraded to the latest A20 series chip.
However, even with the powerful A20 chip, the iPhone 18e’s screen remains at 60Hz, making it difficult to compete with similarly priced Android phones in terms of smoothness.
Android phones in the same price range have long offered 120Hz or even higher refresh rates, with some even supporting adaptive adjustment. Even with its powerful chip, the iPhone 18e cannot compensate for the inherent ghosting and stuttering of a 60Hz refresh rate. For consumers, adding a higher refresh rate to the Lingdong Island (a mobile phone phone with a higher refresh rate) still requires a higher price.
