Recently, the overseas channel MKBHD showcased LG’s previously developed rollable phone prototype. The device features a unique mechanical structure and software optimizations, and is very close to mass production.

LG has now shut down its mobile phone business.

This LG Rollable prototype uses a flexible OLED screen that can be rolled up, rather than a foldable screen design. A built-in dual-gear motor works in conjunction with a spring arm, allowing the screen to be unfolded or retracted with simple gestures.

The screen size is 6.7 inches in its standard state, and can be extended to nearly 7.5 inches when unfolded.

The LG Rollable prototype allows for screen retraction and extension via a three-finger swipe, with a sound effect accompanying each opening and closing, presumably to mask motor noise. When unfolded from the lock screen, the default wallpaper displays an animated effect resembling blooming flowers. Software adaptations have also been implemented; for example, the settings app switches to a two-column layout when the screen is unfolded and reverts to a compact view when collapsed.

Because both sides of the screen are curved, traditional physical buttons could not be placed. The volume control of the LG Rollable prototype is achieved through capacitive touch on the screen, while the power button is unexpectedly located below the rear camera module.

When the screen is fully retracted, part of the display area is hidden behind a transparent glass back cover, forming a rear screen that can display the camera interface, calendar, timer, and playback content. Users can even take selfies directly using the rear-facing 64MP main camera or 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens while the screen is retracted.

Despite its rollable design, the prototype still has visible creases when the screen is unfolded, though these are less pronounced than those found in modern foldable devices.

Before shutting down its mobile phone business, LG launched several innovative products, such as the LG Wing with a rotating screen.
