Apple releases iOS 18.5 official version update to fix the first vulnerability of its self-developed 5G baseband C1
Apple released the official version update of iOS 18.5, which fixed the first vulnerability for Apple’s first self-developed 5G baseband C1.
The vulnerability, numbered CVE-2025-31214, could allow an attacker “in a privileged network position” to intercept network traffic and conduct surveillance or man-in-the-middle attacks. Apple addressed the vulnerability by improving state management.
It is understood that C1 will be first installed on iPhone 16e, marking a key step for Apple on the road to getting rid of its dependence on Qualcomm.
Apple C1 integrates a 5G modem and FR1 RF transceiver, with DC power efficiency increased by up to 25%, and uses a 7nm process technology (Qualcomm SDR875 is 14nm).
Research firm TechInsights noted that by launching the C1, Apple has bought itself more than two years to improve its 5G modem so that it can potentially completely get rid of Qualcomm by 2027.
It is reported that the official version of Apple iOS 18.5 also fixes 31 vulnerabilities including image processing, call records, Bluetooth, FaceTime, WebKit, etc.
