Huawei’s 3D face recognition and side fingerprint algorithms are all self-developed
Recently, a tech blogger revealed that Huawei’s 3D face recognition and side fingerprint technology use completely self-developed algorithms, rather than using a generic solution.
According to reports, Huawei’s upstream suppliers only provide sensors and module components, while the algorithm system is entirely debugged by Huawei itself. This news means that Huawei’s independent R&D capabilities in biometric technology have been further verified, and suppliers cannot profit from the entire solution.
The blogger also stated that the self-developed algorithm for side fingerprint recognition had already been used in previous Huawei devices, while 3D face recognition is the first time it has been self-developed and debugged in this generation. Especially in module debugging, Huawei has further strengthened its technological control. This move not only enhances Huawei’s technological autonomy in the field of biometrics but also demonstrates Huawei’s profound strength in hardware and software integration.
It is understood that Huawei has been using 3D face recognition technology since the Mate 20 Pro, but this feature was only supported on the Pro version. With continuous technological advancements, Huawei has expanded the application of 3D face recognition technology in its new generation of phones.
According to the latest leaks, the Huawei Mate 80 series, which is expected to be released this month, will all come standard with 3D face recognition, whether it’s the basic model or the high-end model.

Furthermore, reports indicate that the upcoming Huawei Mate 80 series will utilize domestically developed technology for its 3D face recognition system, with related components, modules, transmitters, and receivers sourced from top domestic manufacturers, and the procurement volume is expected to be substantial.
This means that while Huawei is promoting technological self-reliance, it is also driving the development of the domestic supply chain and further enhancing the autonomy and competitiveness of the overall technology ecosystem.
