Launching with a bang! Face ID on the iPhone 18 Pro series malfunctions: unlocking freezes and restarts.
According to Fast Technology on September 22, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have been delivered to the first batch of consumers, and some early users have reported multiple Face ID facial recognition malfunctions.
According to feedback from Reddit users, when using Face ID to unlock protected apps, authentication fails, the phone freezes, and then automatically restarts, returning to the lock screen.
This issue is an occasional occurrence and not all models are affected. The extent of the impact of the malfunction is currently unclear.
In addition, users have reported two other issues:
Firstly, some users encountered a “Face ID unavailable” message when registering their face for the first time, making it impossible to complete the registration and configuration.
Secondly, some users have reported that even when the “Require gaze to enable Face ID” option is enabled, the phone does not always follow the setting, posing a security risk.
To achieve a smaller, more dynamic screen, Apple made hardware changes to the iPhone 18 Pro series, moving the Face ID infrared camera to the lower left corner of the screen. The imaging path and light transmittance are directly affected by the screen structure.
It is not yet possible to determine whether these malfunctions are directly related to this hardware relocation.
Industry experts generally believe that these are likely system-level software bugs, and Apple is expected to fix these Face ID issues in a subsequent iOS 27 update.
