Samsung Introduces Eclipsa Audio: A New Spatial Audio Format Co-Developed with Google

At CES 2025, Samsung unveiled a groundbreaking spatial audio format called Eclipsa Audio, developed in collaboration with Google to compete with Dolby Atmos. Designed to be flexible, royalty-free, and accessible, Eclipsa Audio promises to make immersive sound experiences more widely available.
Samsung recently shared more details about this new audio standard, which you can explore here.
What Makes Eclipsa Audio Unique
Eclipsa Audio was built on the Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF), developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM). It delivers three-dimensional spatial audio, creating an immersive experience by accurately positioning sound from all directions—front, back, top, and bottom.
What sets Eclipsa Audio apart is its ability to adapt seamlessly to the device it’s being used on. Whether it’s an entry-level TV, a soundbar, or even a smartphone with stereo speakers, the system optimizes audio positions and spatial reflections automatically. Devices with more advanced audio hardware, such as Samsung’s premium TVs or tablets with multiple speakers, can provide an even richer experience.
Since Eclipsa Audio uses an open-source framework, it’s free of additional fees or royalties. This not only reduces the cost of producing Eclipsa-compatible content but also makes it easier to manufacture compatible audio hardware.
Rollout and Support
YouTube will soon support Eclipsa Audio, allowing creators to integrate the format into their videos. Samsung’s 2025 TV lineup, from its budget-friendly Crystal UHD models to the flagship 8K Neo QLED TVs, will feature Eclipsa Audio out of the box. This format will also be included in the soundbars Samsung is set to launch this year.

Alliance for Open Media (AOM)
Eclipsa Audio is backed by the Alliance for Open Media, a consortium of leading tech companies including Amazon, Apple, Google, Intel, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix, Nvidia, Samsung, and Tencent. This group aims to make advanced technologies more accessible and standardized across industries.
Other notable supporters of AOM include AMD, LG, OPPO, Realtek, Vimeo, and Zoom. With this level of industry backing, it’s likely we’ll see Eclipsa Audio adopted by other TV and speaker brands as well as video streaming platforms.
