It is revealed a latest leak that Huawei is developing its own ultrasonic under-display fingerprint technology. This innovation is part of Huawei’s broader efforts to pioneer in biometric authentication, as the company is also working on proprietary algorithms for optical under-display and capacitive fingerprint recognition technologies, showcasing its formidable R&D capabilities.

Ultrasonic fingerprint recognition is a cutting-edge technology that has gained traction in recent years. It works by emitting ultrasonic waves from sensors located beneath the screen when a finger is pressed against it. These waves interact differently with the ridges and valleys of a fingerprint, creating echoes of varying energy that are captured by the sensor to form a 3D fingerprint image.

The advantages of ultrasonic fingerprint technology include strong penetration, high resistance to water and dirt interference, high recognition rate, support for live detection, and enhanced security.

Most smartphone brands currently rely on under-display fingerprint solutions provided by their supply chains. However, Huawei’s move to develop its own ultrasonic under-display fingerprint technology positions it well ahead of its competitors.

Huawei has significantly increased its investment in R&D, focusing on technological innovation to enhance the competitiveness of its products and solutions. From 2021 to 2023, Huawei’s R&D spending accounted for more than 20% of its revenue, with its total R&D expenditure ranking among the top five globally in 2023.

This development underscores Huawei’s commitment to leading the way in technological advancements and securing its position as a frontrunner in the industry.
